WOVEN CUBES
2021 - 2024
paper weavings
strips of colour cardstock
2" x 2" x 2"
Inspired by the pixel aesthetic of Minecraft, these pieces were the beginning of a new technique in my studio practice, weaving paper. They are made with 1/4" strips of cardstock paper, formed into 2" cubes. The colours and patterns were originally based on Minecraft game blocks.
Minecraft uses biomes and geographical conditions for world generation. Each region has a unique environment with its own blocks for ground, stone, tree/wood. Certain blocks only spawn in specific biomes or underground after a set distance below surface.
Using these systems of classification, I've been creating fictional game blocks based on research and observation of our own unique landscape in Nova Scotia. This is a project I started during a residency at Pavia Gallery in Herring Cove, near the McIntosh Run Watershed and trail systems.
