Making of Recycled Shadows: building process, thinking process ⚙️🔧🧠💫

My intention with this work was to create something uplifting that embodied curiosity and joy. I wanted to embrace the unknown, rather than offer any specific reference or meaning. But meaning is a complex thing.. Working in this abstract and minimalist style allowed me to explore these themes.

Building my project in public was a valuable and vulnerable experience. Answering what is it and why is it lead to engaging and awkward conversations that I’m still reflecting on. I’m so grateful for the discussions I had with you all about the psychology of meaning, the risk and discomfort of the unknown, the creative process and acts of joy.

Making of Recycled Shadows: cardboard prep 📦🤍

I collected used cardboard boxes from nearby shops and all of you who responded to our drop-off call (thanks again!). The boxes were flattened and flaps cut away so the pieces bend into the hollow triangle shapes I used in my installation.

I painted the cardboard white because my colours lights were muted and faded on the natural brown tones. Although it was my intention to recycle all the cardboard afterwards, I learned that our processing facilities in HRM can’t accept painted cardboard; paint contaminates the recycling process (along with food grease and glossy finishes). From a sustainability perspective, that weighted heavy on me!

Cardboard recycling is one of the most successful systems in sustainability. It can be reprocessed up to 7 times until the fibres break down structurally, but even then, the leftover pulp is used for other purposes.

I’m happy to have used a material that was already out in the world, instead of an item newly manufactured for my purposes. But I had wanted to keep my materials in rotation, not the landfill..

If you have any ideas on a biodegradable paint or something similar to make my cardboard white AND recyclable, please share!

I’m using outdoor LED lights with three different colours: red, green and blue. When all three illuminate an area, they create white light. The cardboard casts shadows that block certain colours from making white. When you approach the work, you’ll cast your own shadow and make new colours. Excited to be exploring lights and colour theory.

Recycled Shadows will be the third installation I’ve created from recycled cardboard and reused hardware.

📦 Cardboard allows me to work large, expanding from my usual small paper artworks. I particularly like reusing boxes because of their inherent geometric shapes.

🤎 There’s a material companionship that develops from the process of collecting and flattening the boxes, reading their logos and stamps, knowing their past lives. After envisioning the boxes into something new, when my project is done, I’ll recycle them and they’ll go onto their next life.

♻️ I’m honoured to have my @nocturnehalifax project supported by RECLAIM, a sustainability initiative by @stepspublicart that encourages the repurposing of materials to bring sustainable art to public spaces. Highlighting the eco-friendly aspects of my installation practice has been a motivating and reflective experience that I’m deeply grateful for. Thank you STEPS!!!

Cardboard stuffed car - if we go over a bump the car is going to burst! Height frame finished, made of reclaimed wood. My pal James is the best. Top pieces attached, base structure done. Starting to pop-up the sculptural shapes. Cheesy garlic fries lunch from @sidehustlesnackbar with friendly patio visits and hardware donations. Excited to get into all these treasures. Took an hour to tarp at end of the night. Staying with a friend in Dartmouth until after Nocturne. Let’s gooo!

My project will be a site-specific sculpture on the patio of Lake City Cider in Dartmouth.

I’m building a large outdoor installation made entirely of recycled cardboard and reused hardware. (check out my previous posts if you’d like to contribute!)

I’ll be arranging coloured lights to illuminate the piece in a way that incorporates your shadows and shifts the colours as you explore the work.

I’m collecting hardware for my Nocturne project! Do you have random unwanted handfuls of hardware, miscellaneous piles or cool pieces I can play with?

Since starting my cardboard installations, I’ve been given some nifty hardware. All these neat fasteners and thingamabobs are an inspiring addition to my usual hex bolts and machine screws. I’m excited to utilize reused materials for this project and can’t wait to see what you might have!

In addition to the pallet of tote bins..
- 8 custom designed coroplast boxes
- 17 custom 3-ply soft wrapped packages
- many, many custom designed packing supports
- an out-going shipment of 43 items

Preparing this exhibition for tour was an enormous project. My biggest packing job yet.

This plaque is part of @studiosameerfarooq’s Omphalos artwork. It’s meant to be installed on the floor in front of a large plinth with ceramics. The little fella was almost lost in the shuffle when we setup the show, so I made it a prestigious case for its travels while on tour.

Over the last months I was packing a special exhibition for travel. Sameer Farooq: The Fairest Order in the World, curated by Mona Filip, is now on tour! Exhibiting next at @macmuseum

This video shows @studiosameerfarooq’s “Ascension (Onions)”, consisting of over 600 ceramic onions, each with a specific identification. The pallet has 20 tote bins for three separate artworks (colour coded bins of course), 800+ ceramic objects.
